How do I get my thick hair to straighten?

I'm an African American with very thick medium length hair. I have my hair permed, but about a month into it, the perm fades and I'm left with very thick hair. I try to flat iron it and press it; even rewash it, but nothing seems to keep it straight. I've heard rumors about using wrap lotion, but I have no idea what the process is. I want to be able to have "silky" smooth hair (or something close to it), so if anyone has a routine that they use, I would be very grateful. Also, please suggest how often you trim your edges. THANKS!!

hey... I am Puerto Rican and black... but i have the same problem... but what i do sometimes.. is keep my hair curly until I go to the salon.. but if you must have it straight because your hair doesn't curl then here is what you do!:

1. wash and condition it... condition it very well! Because that is very important!

2. Put leave in conditioner in it and foaming wrap- lotion ( motions is good)

3. Take a rat tail comb- to get all the knots- and wrap your hair! _ if you need assistance ask someone who can wrap hair?

4. Sit under a dryer and let your hair completely dry...

or you can skip 3 and instead of wrapping it but it in rollers. and let it dry completely.

Good luck!!

with hair like yours i would get my hair relaxed because that takes the thickness out and you are left with silky smooth soft hair

i think you should go to the salon and get it relaxed. or if that fails, ask a person who works at a salon. after all, they know all about hair! as for the trimming your ends, you should get them trimmed every 6-8 weeks. hope this helps! =] 閳?br>How do I get my thick hair to straighten?

More than anything, focus on keeping your hair healthy and highly conditioned. Your hair will look gorgeous curly if you have a good cut and 'bounce' (same for straight). But so many Af. Am. women create 'helmet hair" by straightening unhealthy hair. I'd far rather see you celebrate your hair and focus on the health of it than the texture (shiny is beautiful).

One thing that I heard of (I did a search for Nick Arrojo - because he seems to have a lot of love and respect for 'black' hair on the show "What Not to Wear" and found his studio and it's a service they offer) is THERMAL RECONDITIONING to straighten your hair. As with anything else, you are definitely going to want to find someone with a lot of experience, because I'd imagine you can really get damaged hair from poor processes (and apparently it's only been used in the US for 6 years now).

So Sorry!!! I just read the process and it looks like you should NOT use this process if your hair is subject to breakage!!! So go back up to my first paragraph.

with wrap lotions all you have to do is wash and condition your hair then put the wrap lotion in your hair then wrap your hair while its wet and sit under a hooded dryer and let you hair dry and then undo the wrap and flat iron it. It should work or you might just have to relax it every 6 weeks
